Software short-form demo brief template

For software founders and teams that need repeatable demo clips for organic social without turning every post into a vague product tour.

Direct answer

A good software short-form demo brief starts with one user problem, one screen path, one before-and-after moment, and one proof boundary. It should tell reviewers exactly what the demo may show and what it must not imply.

Brief fields

  • Audience: founder, marketer, operator, creator, admin, developer, or buyer.
  • Problem: the one task the viewer recognizes in the first three seconds.
  • Screen path: the exact click path, with dummy data or approved demo data only.
  • Feature boundary: what the feature does today, what is beta, and what should not be shown.
  • Claim boundary: no unsupported time saved, revenue lift, accuracy, ranking, or customer result.
  • CTA: try, read, book, compare, or save the workflow.
  • Approval owner: product, founder, legal, support, or customer success.

Source basis: FTC advertising guidance.

Reusable demo formats

These formats are editorial recommendations for planning short clips. They are not platform requirements and should be adapted to the product, buyer, and available demo assets.

  • Problem to solution: show the messy starting state, then the shortest path to the useful result.
  • Feature teardown: explain one feature with labels, not a full platform tour.
  • Objection answer: handle setup time, cost, permissions, integrations, or review control.
  • Workflow remix: turn a customer question into a narrated screen path using noncustomer demo data.
  • Launch sequence: one clip for the problem, one for the product action, one for the objection, one for the CTA.

Review before recording or generating

  • Replace customer names, account data, URLs, revenue, support tickets, and analytics with approved demo data.
  • Do not show admin keys, private dashboards, unpublished pricing, or internal roadmap language.
  • Use captions that match what appears on screen.
  • Mark speculative or planned features as out of scope instead of implying they exist.
  • Escalate customer logos, testimonials, and benchmark claims before they reach the draft stage.

Filled brief for an illustrative analytics product

This is an original illustrative brief, not a Contengine output and not a claim about a real analytics product.

Audience and problem
Audience: founder. Problem: weekly reporting starts in a blank spreadsheet and nobody trusts the numbers.
Screen path
Open demo workspace, select last 7 days, choose acquisition report, highlight channel table, export approved summary.
Beat plan
0-3s: show the blank report and hook caption. 3-8s: click into the acquisition report. 8-15s: highlight the channel table. 15-22s: export the approved summary. 22-25s: show CTA.
Visual and caption plan
Use dummy dashboard data, zoom on the selected row, and caption only the workflow shown on screen. Avoid customer names, private metrics, and unsupported benchmarks.
Hook
Your weekly growth report should not start with five tabs and a calculator.
Proof boundary
Show workflow speed visually. Do not say it saves a fixed number of hours unless a dated measurement exists.
CTA
Try the reporting workflow, or save this as the template for your next demo clip.

Limitations

  • This template does not validate a product's actual feature availability.
  • Do not turn illustrative demo data into a customer result or benchmark.
  • Adapt the sample timing to the product workflow, screen complexity, available assets, and target platform.

Use this with Contengine

Contengine is built for organic short-form workflows where a brand still reviews what goes out. Start with the source material you already trust, then keep approval decisions explicit.
