Before you post

How to use a hook

  1. Step 1: Say it and show it

Speak the line and put the on-screen text up in the first 1 to 2 seconds. Many people watch with the sound off, so the text has to carry the idea by itself.

  2. Step 2: Fill the brackets with something true

Lines with [brackets], like [your result] or [number], need your own real details. Never use a number, result or review you cannot back up.

  3. Step 3: Open mid-action

Start on movement or on the finished result, not on a logo or a slow intro. The visual idea under each hook gives you a first shot to try.

  4. Step 4: Rotate your hooks

Post a few different hook types over a few weeks and keep the ones your audience reacts to. The same opener again and again goes stale.

Pick the job

The 12 hook types

Each type does a different job. Pick the one your video can honestly deliver on.

  • Curiosity Gap

Opens a question the viewer wants answered, then holds the answer back for a few seconds.

Use it when you have a real answer, tip or reveal to deliver. If the payoff never arrives, viewers feel tricked.

    Example
Here's what nobody tells you about [your topic].
  • Contrarian / Bold Claim

Challenges a common belief, or states a strong opinion, in the first line.

Use it when you can back the claim up in the next few seconds. Be bold about ideas, never about people.

    Example
Most advice about [your topic] gets this wrong.
  • Identity Callout

Names who the video is for, so the right viewer feels spoken to and stays.

Good for niche products and services where your audience is easy to describe in a few words.

    Example
If you're thinking about [your topic], this is for you.
  • Result-First

Shows or states the outcome first, then explains how you got there.

Use it only with a result you can really show. Fill the brackets with your own true outcome.

    Example
[your result] in [timeframe]. Here's how it happened.
  • POV / Mid-Action

Starts inside the moment with no intro, as if the viewer is already there.

Works when your product, service or process is something people can watch in motion.

    Example
POV: you're about to see how [your topic] really works.
  • Number / Stat

Promises a list or a specific figure the viewer can count along with.

Use your own numbers and lists. Never use a figure you cannot source.

    Example
[number] things I wish I knew before I started with [your topic].
  • Confession / Mistake

Admits a mistake or a changed mind, then shares what you do now.

Needs a true story. It builds trust because it is honest, so keep it specific.

    Example
The biggest mistake I made with [your topic].
  • Question

Asks something the viewer wants answered, or has an opinion on.

Keep it relevant to the video. A genuine question invites replies; a vague one reads like bait.

    Example
What's the hardest part about [your topic]?
  • Controversy

Takes a side on something people disagree about.

Pick a topic where disagreement stays friendly, and be ready to explain your reasoning.

    Example
Hot take: there's no one right way to approach [your topic].
  • Storytelling

Opens a short story with a first line the viewer wants to follow.

Works when you have an origin, a customer moment or a turning point. Start with a scene, not a preamble.

    Example
Here's the story behind [your topic].
  • Shock Value

Opens on something surprising, unexpected or unusual.

Use a real surprise from your work. A surprise that never pays off costs you trust.

    Example
I did not expect this when I looked closer at [your topic].
  • Social Proof

Leads with what a real customer, user or client said or did.

Use only real quotes and results, with permission. Never invent a review.

    Example
Here's what [customer name] said about [your topic].

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a hook in short-form video?

A hook is the first line and the first shot of a TikTok, Reel, Short or Facebook video. In the first second or two it tells the viewer why to keep watching. This tool writes the spoken line, the on-screen text and a visual idea for each hook.

Is the hook generator really free?

Yes. It is free, with no signup, no email and no limit on how many times you generate or shuffle.

Does the hook generator use AI?

No. It fills written templates with your topic, so it runs in your browser, answers instantly and sends nothing you type to a server. Contengine itself uses AI to research your brand and make short-form. This free tool does not.

Why do some hooks have [brackets]?

Brackets mark details only you know, like [your result] or [number]. The tool never invents numbers, results or reviews. Replace each bracket with something true before you post.

Which platforms are these hooks for?

They work as openers for short vertical video on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook. Say the spoken line out loud and put the on-screen text on the first frame.

What does Contengine do with hooks?

Contengine learns your brand, writes hooks like these, makes the short-form video and posts it to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook. You approve every post, or turn on auto. Reach is organic, with no ad spend. It costs $29/mo per brand billed annually, or $49/mo month to month, and AI usage is billed at cost.
